I really enjoyed the exhibit of her artwork. It was very unique but also very powerful. I always thought that an artist had to be a painter with beautiful strokes that would portray something that looked so real as though it were a photograph. When in reality, art can be anything the creater views it as. Her artwork was very creative but yet made a bold statement with such vibrant colors. I think that it was I enjoyed the most. The colors she used were so bright and cheery even though many of the images were related to guns or knives. She put her own unique twist on them either with layering colors or the small rhinestones she used. I really enjoyed looking at her pieces.

I also had the oppurtunity to be in there the same time another class was in there viewing her art. There was an instructor that was helping explain somethings. I was very interested in the idea of screen printing. He explained it as a process that had to be done real fast or the art would be ruined. It was crazy for me to think that all of her pieces of art were exactly straight and perfect and not a single smudge. I could not imagine having to work that fast and still getting such great results!

Chapter 11 Balance and Rhythm

Balance can convey emotion in art by using different blocks of color. An example of this would be if two people are being portrayed in a painting and the balance in the painting is the color that surround each person. One block of color could be red while the other might be blue. This would emphasize that the person with most closely juxtoposed next to the red would give an angry or intense feel while the person next to the blue would relate to something cool and relaxing.

Rhythm also expresses emotion. This could be through a use of color, line or texture. Color again would use the idea behind the blue and red and whether the picture is cooling of inferiorating. Using rhythm through lines I think would be the best way to portray emotion. This could be with the use of straight lines with sharp angles. This view of the potrait would lead the viewer to concentrate on the harsh lines and think of emtoins such as angry, mad or inferious. If the artist were to use soft curvy lines the viewer might relate emotions such as happy, friendly and relazed.

Overall, both of these items relate to the unity. This is because seperately the different styles have to fit with a painting in order for the whole idea to come across. For example, if drawing a picture of the ocean the lines would not be harsh they would be soft and relaxing which would relate to the overall picture and the colors incorporated as well.

I think the most interesting aspect is texture. No matter what type of medium the artist is using or the work they are trying to create texture is everywhere. I believe that texture creates the piece of work. For example, my favorite project so far has been the self-portrait. This is because I really enjoyed how the texture of mine turned out and how it heightened and added volume to my hair as well as emphasized my skin. It was also interesting to see how other students texture turned out in there self portraits. Depending on the size of the dots they use, or how thick the paint was layered on each person had their own unique texture.

Another medium that I enjoyed working with for texture were the oil pastels. For my project I believe that the oil pastels really emphasized the objects I chose to illustrate. This is because it was so easy to blend the colors together or highlight them with different line thickness. This really helped with the texture in that the lines portrayed the fact of muscle ligaments even though it was an abstract drawing.

I did not like the colored pencil project at all because of the lack of texture. Texture really jumps out at the viewer and creates a piece of works own personality so when the drawings lacked the texture I thought they were very boring.

Hopefully with the next project and being able to choose our own canvas the class will find new and exciting textures to incorporate in their work.

Importance of Unity

We learned in lecture this past week how unity is very important to a piece of work. A viewer will be more attracted to the piece if colors were unified or maybe the same shapes were resembled. An artist may argue like somethings that are unified are not art. For example, our teacher pointed out that he did not believe that the same size boxes placed equal distance apart all the same color was art. I would have to agree with him, however it did show unity. That piece of art would be more related to modern art where as in history unity might be referred everyone wearing the same style dress in a painting. Unity reaches all the way back to the beginning of art to the now very modern pieces. This proves that anything we have done in the past till now has unity.

Unity can be witnessed in many professions. I know that in teaching it is important for every teacher who teaches that same grade needs to understand the goals that they want each student to reach so they now how to reflect their lessons. It is also important for teachers to be able to relate to eachother so that if a problem arises they may seek another colleague. Unity can also be seen in the profession by the installment of the Union. This brought teachers together to seek benefits and pay increases.

Creating Space

The use of space is important as well how was space is created. A painting might not be as appealling if the picture is not balanced will affecting the look of space. In other words, if they painting is crowded and asymmettrical and nothing works together the use of space will make the viewer not be attracted. There are many things that you can incorporate into a drawing like the visual elements to create space. These techniques are line, shape, texture, color and value. By adding lines to create a focal point of the piece of art creates a certain persepctive. For example, if you looked at a picture of a street that was lined with buildings. it would eventually lead to one point. The piece of work is symmetrically balanced and crwoded yet there is also space created in the middle to direct attention to the focal point. Another way to create space is color. This can be used by changing the tint of a hue to show variation or gradiation to illustrate a shadow. It proves to the viewer that there is space there but it is represented with a shadow. texture also creates space by making different layers of items such as the collage. Texture was used alot when we layered which created more space for the artist.

The idea in art work is to express emotion and to express yourself. I think that this self portrait is obviously doing a great job of it. I was having difficulty trying to decide what magazine was my favorite becuase I can find anything in a magazine that would represent myself, but I chose the magazine Shape because I believe it expresses all aspects of myself. I am having the most difficulty on the self portrait. I am a bright happy person I believe, but the colors that go into the painting for my hair color and eyes are much darker hues that relate to a sad depressed feeling. I know I have the option to use a warm color scheme however I am not the person to have abstract ideas in a painting. This class has really helped me identify that because I struggled with the abstract painting that we had to create.

The only thing that I can actually agree on is texture in a painting. I love the look of impasto because it conveys many different types of emotion. Especially of a 2D drawing it will be really helpful to show different features of the face. Hopefully I will be able to implement my ideas into a painting that really expresses the real me.

Chap 6 Texture

Texture is my favorite aspect of art. I believe that the most emotion can be expressed through texture. My favorite form of this is impasto- the building up of paint thickly on a canvas surface. Impasto really made my abstract painting come to life. It gave a soft flowing feeling as the song does when you listen to it. This texture also helped with the paintings we viewed in class. One picture was dark and very thickly painted giving the viewer the idea of a somber story, while the other painting was of a mother used with light colors and laying of paint to express a soft warm feeling.

Texture can be used in many other ways not just emotion. It also creates a pattern. Patterns may be specific to leading the viewer to a certain spot on the painting. Patterns can be used in abstract like my painting or in a realistic to show how actual something maybe. Everything you look at and touch has texture. The more texture put into a piece of art no matter what form, gives the painting its unique features and characteristics. In order to show a viewer what you are actually feeling, texture should always be incorporated.

I found the article very interesting. There are many things that I did not realize take such an impact on color. For instance businesses, I never understood why graphic design was becoming so popular. After reading this article I now realize how important color can be when determining logos. This then calls for a need of designers to determine these colors so that other countries feel the same way about the logo as the company trying to tell. Especially today with our market, companies are also trying to find new buyers whether they are overseas or not.

Color can also play a huge factor in anyone’s life. Think about how many people in the morning try on more than five outfits until they are just perfect. People are so worried about what they look like today that color in their outfit has a huge outcome. When you go to a store shopping you can buy just about any t-shirt in at least five different colors. I know that what I pay attention to most in others outfits is the way their colors fit together. Nobody should be allowed to wear black and brown together or navy blue and black. They simply just don’t go. Other countries reflect this same idea where they grouped black and brown together.

Chap 3 and 4

Abstract art is so powerful. It leaves any decisions up to the artist. No matter what the artist draws he can make it into anything he wants. Whether he changes the color of something or changes the shape. These ideas are very important when thinking about a piece of work. Sometimes when you walk through a museum and see a painting that is just a bunch of colorful squares might actually have meaning to it, otherwise it would be in the museum. An artist took time to think about where they should be placed and what they might represent.

I know this is the hardest concept for me in my project that we are working on now. I have no idea what shape to make the separate buildings or how to make them work with each other. Because the song is a slower more soft song I also need to use not as harsh shapes or as harsh of colors. I am making my picture of a barn which is a harsh shape and a deep red. However by breaking up the shape into smaller shapes it should detract from the solid shape. I can then blend paint together to paint each circle of the barn to lighten up the shade.

Tweed Museum

I have walked by the Tweed so many times and never gave in the attention it needs. I was so surprised on the tour. I had no idea that UMD has such a cool reference to it. Not only does It have famous paintings but also a library to sit down and study those paintings and artists. I really enjoyed walking through the Tweed Museum and see what it all entitled too.

I really enjoyed the student section and how it represents different students work. I think this is a great thing to achieve after all of the time that art students put into their creativity. Not only do they just get a job from all of the time, but a chance to show off all of their hard work and dedication. I think the Tweed is a great way to do it. I also really enjoyed the faculty part of the tour. Not many students realize how talented some of their teachers are. It amazes me at how many faculty actually have entries in it.

The tour guide was also fantastic. It is really interesting getting a tour from a person that thoroughly enjoys what he does. He was enthusiastic and knew many facts about every painting and every artist. He did a good job at showing the highlights of the Tweed and other things that you can expect to see at the different times of the year. I think the Tweed is a good place for anyone looking for ideas on what to do for a project or getting ideas on how to add to their project. The Tweed is a great resource!
